Adult care charge changes
Surrey County Council is making changes to how it charges for adult social care at home or in the community. These changes may affect how much some people pay. The aim is to help keep adult social care sustainable in the future. The changes do not affect people who live in residential or nursing care.
The first change affects people who have more than £23,250 in capital. Capital means money or assets that someone owns, such as savings. It does not include the value of the home they live in. From 2 February 2026, anyone with more than £23,250 in capital will need to pay the full cost of their care. The current threshold is £24,500.
The second change affects people with capital between £14,250 and £23,250. From 2 February 2026, Surrey County Council will add a small weekly amount to what these people pay. This is £1 for every £250 of capital. This is called tariff income. The most anyone will pay in tariff income is £36 each week.
Surrey County Council has written to everyone known to adult social care who may be affected. The council is also holding five drop-in sessions in local libraries during January. Staff will explain the changes, talk about how financial assessments work and answer questions.
