How much does care cost?

A new online tool is now available to help people in Surrey understand the long-term cost of care.

Many people in Surrey pay for their own care or help a loved one do so. Because of their savings or property, they are not eligible for financial support from the council.

The Care Cost Indicator shows how much care could cost over time. It uses a sliding scale to show costs over weeks, months and years. It also gives practical advice and links to more help.

Why this matters

Most people do not know how much care costs. Many only find out during a crisis.

  • 81% of local people worry about paying for care
  • 27% do not know what to plan for
(Surrey Heartlands Citizens Panel, January 2025)

Some people run out of money and then qualify for council support. This can mean moving care homes, which is upsetting for them and their families.

Who can use the tool

The Care Cost Indicator is useful for:

  • people who pay for their own care
  • families planning ahead
  • professionals talking to clients about care options

It helps people make informed choices and plan early.
